How to Apply for a Passport (Step by Step)

The Government of Pakistan has made passport applications easier through the online portal managed by the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports (DGIP). Follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Visit the Official Portal

Go to www.onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk – this is the only official website for machine-readable passport applications.

Step 2: Register an Account

Click on “New User” and enter your CNIC/NICOP number, mobile number, and email address. You’ll receive an OTP for verification.

Step 3: Fill the Application Form

Select the type of passport (new, renewal, lost), number of pages (36, 72, or 100), and validity (5 or 10 years). Provide personal details exactly as they appear on your CNIC.

Step 4: Upload Documents & Photo

Upload scanned copies of your CNIC (or B-Form for minors) and a recent passport-size photograph (45mm x 35mm, white background, with a neutral expression). The system will guide you on size and format.

Step 5: Pay Fees Online

Fees can be paid via JazzCash, Easypaisa, or bank challan (any branch of National Bank of Pakistan or designated banks). Keep the payment receipt safe—you’ll need it later.

Step 6: Schedule Appointment (if required)

For first‑time applicants or cases that require biometric verification, you’ll be given an appointment at your nearest passport office. Bring original documents and the printed application form.

Step 7: Biometric & Submission

Visit the passport office on the scheduled date. Your fingerprints and photograph will be captured. The officer will verify your documents and issue a tracking slip.

Step 8: Track & Collect

Use the Shikra tracking system (explained below) to monitor your passport’s progress. When ready, you can either collect it in person or opt for courier delivery (available in selected cities).

Passport Renewal Guide

Passport Apply Guide for renewal

Renewing your passport is straightforward. You can apply up to one year before expiry without any penalty. Follow the same online steps as a new application but select the “Renewal” option.

Important Points

  • If your passport has expired, you can still renew using the same process.

  • If you want to add pages (e.g., upgrade from 36 to 72 pages), simply select the new page count during application.

  • No need to return the old passport in most cases—just bring it to the passport office for verification.

Lost or Damaged Passport?  What to Do

Losing a passport can be stressful, but the replacement process is clear:

  1. File a Police Report (FIR) – Visit the nearest police station and obtain a First Information Report (FIR) for the lost or stolen passport.

  2. Write an Affidavit – On stamp paper, explain the circumstances of the loss and declare that you have not found the passport after diligent search.

  3. Apply Online – Select “Lost / Damaged Passport” in the application form. Upload the FIR and affidavit.

  4. Attend Verification – You may be called for additional scrutiny. Bring original documents.

  5. Pay Fees – Fees are the same as for a new passport.

Special Cases: Married Women, Minors & Overseas Pakistanis

Married Women

Following a Lahore High Court directive in February 2026, married women can now retain their father’s name on their passport. The system has been updated to allow this choice during application. You are not required to change your name to your husband’s surname if you prefer not to.

Minors (Under 18)

  • Parents must apply on behalf of the child.

  • A B‑Form (CRC) is required.

  • Both parents’ CNICs are needed; if one parent is deceased, provide the death certificate.

  • Minors aged 10 and above may be asked to appear for biometric verification.

Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP Holders)

  • Apply online through the same DGIP portal.

  • You can select “Delivery Abroad” (courier charges apply) and receive your passport at your foreign address.

  • Processing times may vary depending on your location.
